StrengthsFinder: Uncovering your Natural-Born Strength

A few months ago, I was introduced to the book “Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath”. The intent was to uncover and clarify our God given strength. And that is what we did at our bi-weekly meeting with members of the business networking group I frequently attend. Needless to say, there are several tools that we can use to figure out our life’s purpose or what we are good at. But the difference between all the other tools and this book was the focus on strengths.

As a society, we are more inclined to improve the weakness within us. Are you weak at mathematics? Study harder, get trained a make improvements. Do you suck as an actor? Well… you live in Hollywood; you should really try and improve your art. The reality is we all have strengths and weakness. The trick is to enhance what you are naturally inclined to be good at and let the people who excel in what you are weak at, takeover your weak areas.

“As simple as it sounds, we all must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we’ve been given.”  Mary Lou Retton

The Book:  It’s an extensively researched short and simple read with a questionnaire for you to fill out at the end of the book. Allow at least 45minutes to fill out the questionnaire online. You will receive a detailed report of your top 5 strength with helpful applications to enhance the strength.

Hint: Fill out the questionnaire before reading the book. I got better understanding of my results using this approach.

Summary of my Results:

I was fascinated at how accurate the results were. It was like completing a complicated puzzle and fitting all the pieces into a 19 page report. For me, that was golden. I had an opportunity to make sense of all the activities that appeared random at the time but yet it wasn’t random. I am designed to love people, to have more ideas than I can count, to achieve greatness, teach & get fulfillment from other people’s progress.

  • I got confirmation of some strength I knew I had.
  • I was reminded of some strength that I had ignored so they lay dormant.
  • I discovered strength that I took for granted because of how easily they came to me that I had never considered developing them. I concluded I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Relator – People who are especially talented in the Relator theme enjoy close relationships with others. They find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal. Also, you maintain an optimistic outlook on life regardless of the value some people place on your results. Because of your strengths, you genuinely enjoy activities when just about everything makes sense. You naturally gravitate to tasks where facts, events, processes, or ideas are methodically outlined.

Achiever – People who are especially talented in the Achiever theme have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive. Also, by nature, you set very high expectations for yourself. Typically you push yourself until you reach your goals. You are not content unless you deliver the best performance or produce the most outstanding results. Instinctively, you typically put forth much effort and energy to reach your goals.

Developer – People who are especially talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements. Also, typically you find purpose and meaning in the simple things money cannot buy. Instinctively, you realize that sharing information, resources, talents, and even time provides you with experiences to grow as a person and as a professional. By nature, you seek opportunities to tell others about facts you know or experiences you have had.

Learner – People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them. Also, it’s very likely that you are motivated to continually acquire knowledge and skills. Discovering new ways to use your talents energizes you.

Ideation – People who are especially talented in the Ideation theme are fascinated by ideas. They are able to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena. Also, instinctively, you welcome opportunities to exchange new theories, innovative thoughts, and intriguing concepts.

Take the time to uncover your strength, it’s easier to develop areas you are already naturally good.
